Cabo during COVID
I know most are still a little hesitant about traveling right now and I was too until I took my first flight at the end of August. Airports aren’t as busy and most airplanes are cleaner now than ever before. Shoutout to Southwest Airlines for keeping the middle seat open until at least the end of November! American Airlines on the other hand is still packing their planes but enforcing masks, which I guess helps in the safety of its passengers.
My in-laws have been going to Cabo for over ten years and have a unit that we stay at so we decided to spend about 12 days down there. Upon arrival at SJD we went through the normal customs process but this time they gave us a health form to fill out and return while we walked by a screen that took our temperature. All employees and cab drivers outside were wearing masks so I felt pretty safe!
Once we arrived to our resort our temperatures were taken before they let us in the gate while we were still in the taxi. Luckily we had groceries delivered ahead of time and just needed a couple things from Costco. Two people from our party went but they’d only let one person in per Costco card – they seem a little more prepared than we are in the States!
Eating out
La Chatita
Our first night here we ate on the marina at La Chatita. They have one entrance/exit that you walk through and they have a sanitizing mist which felt more like a shower but hey I applaud them for trying to keep their guests safe! Their food and drinks were still as good as they were pre-covid – highly recommend if you’re ever in that area! The most fun thing about them is the creativity they have with the fruit garnish on their drinks!
Hacienda Cocina y Cantina
This is always a go-to for us since it’s at the resort we stay at. Our go to is guacamole for an appetizer and a molcajete for dinner. It’s got cheese, chicken, beef, corizo, beans, cactus, avocado and more in it and you basically make your own tacos with it! Highly recommend. Make sure to save room for dessert – their churros are the BEST!
Roasted Grill and Bar
I’d recommend going to Roasted when it’s cooler at night as it’s outside and the grill they cook on is pretty close to the dining area so it can get a little toasty! It was a fun atmosphere with a tree growing right in the middle with Christmas lights wrapped around the trunk and live music which was a nice little touch. Be prepared to smell like the grill when you leave! The food was pretty good – a couple people in our group got steak and baked potato and liked it, I got parmesan chicken – it was good but I probably wouldn’t order it again. I give them props for their COVID protocols. Every staff member wore a mask and they took our temperature by placing the thermometer to our hand and had us wear masks until we were seated.
The Office
Just down Medano Beach from us is a string of restaurants and The Office is one of them. They’re owned by the same people that own Edith’s so you know the food is going to be good! We all got different types of tacos – shrimp, sea bass and flank steak – and enjoyed them! Their guac was tasty and their drinks were strong. Since it’s right on the beach you may be bombarded with beach vendors trying to sell you everything but the kitchen sink while you’re eating. We got suckered in to a decorative bowl but y’all – it’s the cutest thing ever with turtles on it! If you find something you like you can typically barter with them to get them down.
Da Vinci’s
Da Vinci’s is a great spot on the marina if you’re craving pizza. One pizza can feed two people unless you’re really hungry then you may want to get your own! They have indoor and outdoor dining but being that we were here in October we opted to call in and pick it up to eat back in the unit in the AC!
Salvatore’s Italian Restaurant
The vibe of Salvatore’s is bright and airy with TONS of plants and a small fountain in the middle. It’s all outside so I’d recommend going later at night when it cools off. The portions are massive so be prepared to have leftovers or share with someone! Their sangria is top notched but this time I went with their special, Wild Berries, which was vodka, soda, and berries – quite tasty! You can’t go wrong with any of their entrees but I’m a big fan of their pesto shrimp pasta. Save room for dessert because they have some rich chocolate mousse or a slice of tiramisu the size of Italy!
The Italian Job
Who goes to Mexico and eats Italian? We do! Sometimes you just have taco and guacamole overload and need something else. The Italian Job is right down the street from our resort and fairly new so we decided to try it out! I walked in and felt like I had been transported to Italy for the evening – the lights and greenery were beautiful and there was wine everywhere! We ordered pizza and each got our own – unless you’re really hungry, I’d share with someone or take it home for leftovers because they’re pretty decent size!
Gardenia’s
Gardenia’s is a little hole in the wall just down the hill from our resort. They have super cheap tacos, quesadillas and more! The best part is the taco comes out with just the meat/seafood/etc and the tortilla and then you get to choose the toppings you want to add at your table! My husband and I ate lunch there for about $20 which I’d say is a pretty good deal!
After our twelve day stay I was ready to come home but really enjoyed checking out for a while and taking a break from work and the reality that 2020 has brought. The airports felt safe, Cabo was following proper guidelines to keep locals and tourists safe and the weather was ah-mazing! Until next time, Cabo!
XO,
Morgan
