My Self Care Routine & Tips
Self care is so important and often not talked about enough. Each person is different but over the years I have found certain habits to keep me feeling my best and limit my anxiety. I truly believe that you feel your best when you take care of yourself mentally and physically. The more I implement these practices, the better I become at not being so hard on myself and listening to what my body is telling me.
Getting adequate sleep
I will be the first to tell you that if I don’t get at least eight hours of sleep, I am so grumpy the next day! If I’m tired I try to take it easy that day and not over exert myself and try to remind myself that there’s always tomorrow to be productive. Listening to your body’s needs is SO important to stay healthy! Having a child has changed this a little – when she was little and not sleeping through the night my body adjusted to the temporary sleep change but now that we’re in a better groove I find that I’m a better version of myself after a good night of sleep!
Pamper yourself
I try to have a few ‘treat yourself’ days throughout the year. I find that massages are very relaxing and release any tension built up in my neck and shoulders and feel 100 times better when I leave the spa. I’ve also had some facials to refresh my skin! While spas may not be for everyone, pampering may be as simple and easy as an at-home face mask or a daily skincare routine that makes you feel refreshed.
Get outside
With a growing infant, we try to get outside as much as we can – summers in Texas make it a little challenging but we do our best to get some Viatmin D when we can! Our activity outside varies but I’ve found that fresh air helps me clear my head and activate my senses which ultimately reminds me that while the world may be chaotic, everything is going to be okay – feeling the sun on my skin, hearing birds chirp at each other, smelling the Magnolias that are blooming.
Listen to some tunes
I love music. I listen to a wide variety of genres and it usually depends on the mood I’m in. Sometimes I listen to Christian music when I just need a little pick me up, my go to is usually country, and when I work out I like upbeat rap and hip hop to give me energy and keep my adrenaline pumping!
Move your body
Exercise is scientifically proven to boost your mood. Are there times I’m just really not in the mood to get my workout in? Absolutely. Most of the time I try to push through because I know once I’m done with it, I’ll feel better and be glad I completed it! It could be as simple as going on a walk through your neighborhood or signing up for a group exercise class like spin or Pilates – anything to get your endorphins going!
Self care looks different for everyone but it’s SO important and I’ve learned that after working from home for over a year now since the world shut down due to a pandemic. Whatever self care means to you, I challenge you to start regularly implementing part of it into your life!
